Men's A success in England Hockey Men's Trophy!

Vikings HC Men (Isle of Man) travelled to Merseyside yesterday (24th October) to take on Liverpool Sefton HC in the England Men's Hockey Trophy. Fielding what was close to their strongest team for the first time this season, Vikings turned in a top quality performance to surprise the home side and progress to the next round.

Following a cracking 4 - 4 draw in normal time, extra time failed to separate the teams and it took a penalty shootout to decide the outcome, Vikings taking it 6 - 5 in sudden death.

From the first whistle Vikings took the game to the home side with Juan Corlett's pace causing problems down the left. This early pressure resulted in a penalty corner superbly converted by Conor Byrne. Sefton hit back with a well taken goal before taking the lead with the benefit of a highly dubious penalty flick and Vikings were rocked as the home team extended their lead to 3 - 1 a couple of minutes later.

Vikings were continuing to create chances with Paul Kelly always threatening and winning penalty corners. Despite the score line keeper Dave Elliot was having a storming game pulling off several excellent saves. The Manx team were rewarded as they reduced the deficit just before the interval when Byrne was on hand to score from close range.

The second half opened with Vikings on top, and they drew level when the tenacious Gerry Quinn finished expertly, before Byrne completed his hat trick with another superb penalty corner goal. Vikings were looking stronger than the home side as the clock ran down, but against the run of play Sefton took the game into extra time with a well struck penalty corner goal.

Following the goalless extra time, the penalty shoot out loomed. Keeper Elliot (later voted man of the match) pulled of a couple of good saves, and it was fitting that impressive Captain Andy Harding stepped up to convert the winning flick to see Vikings progress to the next round.

Vikings will be looking to take this form into the remainder of the league season to see if they can get themselves back into the title race for the Mens Premiership.
