Match Report: MT Vikings Ladies A vs Penrith Ladies

Penrith 3 - MT Vikings 8

With freezing temeratures in Penrith and the game already having been postponed once, the game was switched to Lancaster. Manx Telecom Vikings Ladies were ready to carry on with their Ladies Vase Campaign and get 2011 off to a winning start.

Vikings started well early in the first half and took the lead through Captain Kim Carney. The second goal then came in quick succession through a reverse shot by Carney again, Vikings seemed to settle but were still very attacking which lead to a break from Penrith which left a 4 on 2 situation which Penrith took advantage off. A great run of play and passing lead for Vikings third Goal, from a swept ball into the circle from Louise Slater which Kim Carney deflected past the keeper. Vikings taking a comfortable half time 3-1 lead.

After the break MT Vikings scored early, when a ball was sent wide right to Sarah Breen who found her way into the circle. After numerous shots which resembled a tennis rally rather than a hockey match, Breen converted. Penrith Attacked well for a time and found that an overloaded circle meant Vikings couldn’t clear the ball and Penrith converted their second goal. Vikings stuck back with a well taken set play and a penalty corner, Karan Faragher placing a precision ball to the left post for Katie Errock to reverse.

Unfortunately after this Vikings lost Marie Goosen from the game with a fractured elbow. Vikings still had the momentum for a while which saw Carney score her fourth. Penrith fought back again and caught Vikings on the break to get their third and take it to 6-3. Identical to the 5th goal Errock converted again. Finally two minutes from the end, great work from Zoe Carney supplied her sister Kim to net the 8th goal through the keeper’s legs.

Manx Telecom Vikings Ladies A vs Penrith Ladies (Away)

Push Back: Saturday 8th January 11.00am

Manx Telecom Vikings Ladies A travel to Cumbria on Friday to take on Penrith Ladies in the re-arranged second round of the EHA Vase competition. The game was originally due to be played on Sunday 28th November but was postponed due to bad weather.

Penrith play in the Cumbria Women’s Division 1 and are modestly placed in mid table so far this season. A convincing 7-0 victory over Ambleside in the last round means Vikings Ladies will be full of confidence heading into the encounter which has all the potential of being a cracking game.

This season Manx Telecom Vikings Ladies A have only conceded 5 goals in the last 12 games so the defence will be eager to keep another clean sheet against Penrith who in contrast have only had one clean sheet so far this season.

Personnel has changed slightly with defenders Suzanne Slater and Eilis Kerford still away in New Zealand and South Africa respectively. Vikings have Kirsty Bowley returning from a spell in Ireland to step in to the breach. Others unavailable to travel this time are midfielders Beckie O’Brien and Danielle Coombes. Karen Faragher returns to the team after being unavailable for the original fixture.

Vikings Ladies are looking forward to getting 2011 off to a winning start after a long lay off due to the inclement weather and the Christmas break.

Squad: Debbie Shimmin (GK), Jen Dougal, Hayley Crowe, Kirsty Bowley, Kitty Henry, Louise Slater, Zoe Carney, Sarah Breen, Marie Goosen, Kim Carney (c), Katie Errock, Karen Faragher and Team Managers Jan Carney and Kirsty Cooper.
