Manx Telecom Vikings Ladies A vs Stratford Ladies – 20th Feb @ 12.30pm

Manx Telecom Vikings Ladies went into the game not knowing what to expect from Stratford. This reflected in a nervous first ten minutes with Stratford started off very attacking right from the push back.

Stratford did come close to the Vikings circle quite early on in the game but Vikings held firm and found their composure which resulted in the majority of the early exchanges cancelling each other out in midfield.

Stratford countered with a change of tactics, long balls and hard clearances lead to Stratford coming close with a penalty corner which Vikings dealt with from a good clearance off the post by Hayley Crowe.

Their sweeper & Captain did a good job at the back by clearing up the loose balls but for long periods could only clear the ball ten metres or so to another Vikings forward who initiated the next attack.

A cleared ball, 4 minutes from half time fell nicely into Sarah Breen’s paths which enabled her to go past her defender and supply a fine ball into the circle where Karen Faragher made a great run and deflected the ball past the keeper.

Stratford had two Penalty corner chances right at the half time whistle which to their frustration they failed to convert.

Vikings started the second half with more composure and some fine defending from the Vikings Back line gave the ladies in black a firm grip on the contest. Vikings came close with a few chances but the Stratford Goalkeeper made some fine saves. The game was a tight affair and as fitness started to become a factor, Stratford were caught at the back. Kim Carney took the ball across the pitch to shoot diagonally at goal; the ball hit the inside of the post and trickled in.

With only 4 minutes of the game left, Stratford substituted their keeper to go for broke with an extra outfield player. This tactic seemed to work at first but eventually a long ball counter attack from Zoe Carney ended up at the stick of Karen Faragher who sealed the victory 3-0 with only 1 minute left on the clock.

Vikings now face Newcastle Ladies on 13th March for a place in the semi-finals.
