Manx Telecom Vikings Ladies A vs Clitheroe (30th October)

Manx Telecom Vikings Ladies travel to England on Sunday to face Clitheroe Ladies in the first round of the Investec England Hockey Women’s Trophy.

The game will take place at Liverpool College as a Vikings home game, which will mean the North Division Two team will make the short journey down the M6.

After reaching the Semi-final of the Vase competition again last season. Vikings have decided to go up into the trophy competiton. At Present Vikings are in the middle of the mixed season, so have not played together as a Ladies team since April. Although one advantage for Vikings is that eight of the thirteen travelling ladies have trained together all summer for the Island team and went on to win the Inter Island competition in Guernsey in September.

Clitheroe are five games into North Hockey Div 2 West at present and are sitting pretty at the top (in a league of twelve)with four wins and one loss. The likes of Oldham, who Vikings beat in 2010, are in their league along with Alderley edge who won the Vase last year and beat Vikings in the semi finals.

Warm Vikings welcomes go to Sarah Blackman who has transferring from Castletown and Kirsty Cooper who returns to the team after having a baby. Vikings will be without Danielle Coombes who is now attending and playing hockey for Plymouth Uni.

Vikings are looking forward to stepping up to the challenge of this years Trophy Competition:

Squad: Sarah Pressley GK, Jen Dougal, Hayley Crowe, Kirsty Bowley, Eilis Kerford, Suzanne Slater, Louise Slater, Zoe Carney, Sarah Breen, Kim Carney (c), Katie Errock, Kirsty Cooper, Sarah Blackman.

England Hockey Mens Trophy (Sunday 23rd October)

Manx Telecom Vikings mens hockey team travel to Manchester this Sunday 23rd October to face their biggest challenge in many years when they play Didsbury Northern in the England Hockey Trophy. Didsbury are sitting in a mid table position in the North 1 Mens league with 2 wins and 2 defeats in their opening fixtures, and are at a higher playing level than any team Vikings have faced since the days of cup ties against the likes of Neston and Brooklands back in the last millennium.

MT Vikings have the significant disadvantage of not playing any mens matches for several months as we are currently in the midst of the mixed season on the Island. However, after a very patchy domestic campaign earlier in the year, hopefully Vikings will rise to the challenge of UK opposition and enjoy the opportunity to test themselves against relatively unknown opponents.

Several experienced players who did so well last year against Sefton and Bramhall are unavailable for selection for this fixture. This gives an opportunity for others, so a few first time travelers give the Manx side a fairly youthful look with plenty of pace to trouble Didsbury, but with a number of regular Island squad players providing the strength in the spine of the team.

Didsbury face a tough league game the day before when they play unbeaten top of the table Alderly Edge, so Vikings will be hoping that match takes a lot out of their opposition whilst their own mixed matches on Saturday will be less strenuous.
